GVM UPGRADES
WHY UPGRADE YOUR GVM
The GVM Upgrade is designed and tested for those who want to carry more “Payload”, legally and safely. It will ensure significant improvements in your 4×4 functioning including carrying capacity, smooth ride & comfort, better steering, 4×4 performance and towing stability.
Every time you “Add Load” to your 4WD vehicle, whether temporary or permanent, the responsiveness of the Original Equipment (OE) suspension will change. More weight will force the engine, suspension, axles and brakes to work harder than its original design. This can compromise the ongoing 4WD performance, the longevity of the 4WD vehicle and ultimately “your safety” on the road.
BENEFITS OF GVM

2. Less Wear & Tear on your 4WD Vehicle

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT GVM
Gross Vehicle Mass
GVM, is how much the vehicle can weigh when fully loaded. This includes the weight of the vehicle itself, known as ‘kerb weight’.
Payload
Is the difference between the GVM and the kerb weight. This includes you and all passengers plus any accessories fitted to the vehicle, including the towbar.
Gross Combination Mass
GCM, is the towed weight added to the weight of the vehicle plus any payload.
DO I NEED A GVM UPGRADE?
This will depend on your 4WD vehicle (the make, model & year);
how many modifications you have made;
how many additions you have added (or are about to add)
and what you are going to tow.

As ‘the table’ shows, a stock Ford Ranger, fitted with the usual accessories, has a remaining available payload of just 425kg. Minus average weight of occupants & seating capacity luggage, on average you may be left with only 17kg for all additional luggage/tents/camping accessories, 4WD accessories, trailer ball weight and much more……

SUSPENSION KIT UPGRADE Vs GVM KIT UPGRADE
What’s the Difference?
A SUSPENSION KIT UPGRADE
Is a great way to “assist” your 4×4 to carry your load. Individually specialised to suit your vehicle and what you want to carry, the suspension kit can be set to carry a more permanent or temporary load. Suspension upgrades are usually suggested for a load limit increase that is under 10 percent.
A GVM KIT UPGRADE
Is required if you are “overweight”. It provides you with the additional payload you need to cover what you want to do with your vehicle.
Forces generated by a heavily loaded 4×4 vehicle in rough terrain can be greatly higher than those generated during normal driving. The vehicle springs must match the vehicle load fin order to achieve optimum ride height and body control. If the shock absorbers do not possess the correct amount of damping resistance, the vehicle will be highly susceptible to a rollover accident. Foam Cell Shock Absorbers are well suited to increased load in hot off-road and demanding environments. They distribute the oil more evenly around the shock body resulting in more dissipation of heat and long-lasting control.
AN UPGRADE GVM KIT INCLUDES
- Shock Absorbers
- Strut Shock Absorbers
- Coil Springs
- Leaf Springs
- Tyre Placard
- Polyurethane Bush Kit
- Non-Greaseable Pin
- Rear Greaseable Shackle
- Brake Hose Extension Bracket
- SSM Compliance Plate (Pre-Reg Only)

MAKING YOUR 4WD GVM COMPLIANCE
Federal Compliance
Federal Standards come into play for “New” 4×4 vehicles before they are registered. These upgrades are legally recognised as having undergone a second stage of manufacture (SSM). An additional compliance plate is fitted to the vehicle stating the revised GVM.
Warranty Claims
In most cases, a GVM upgrade will not affect your vehicle’s warranty. However, it’s always best to check your vehicle’s manufacturer to ensure your warranty will remain intact.
Checking Your 4WD Vehicle Weight
Knowing your vehicle weights and trailer weights is important. There are many public weighbridges in Australia that allow you to weigh your 4×4 and trailer/caravan.
State Compliance
Applies to registered 4WD vehicles that have a GVM upgrade fitted, as an aftermarket modification. This means the vehicle will need to be engineered by an approved signatory once the kit is fitted. Engineering requirements differ from state to state. However, approval is valid whilst driving throughout Australia, as long as registration is still current in the original state.
Understanding Your Insurance
It is possible for your insurance company to avoid giving you a pay out on your vehicle if it is exceeding its maximum GVM. Therefore it is important to make sure you are aware of your legal load limit and to upgrade it when necessary.
